Pleural Mesothelioma DrugsThere are a number of drugs available to those who suffer from mesothelioma.Alimta/Cisplatin Alimta is a new cancer drug used to treat inoperable malignant pleural mesothelioma by blocking specific enzymes thought to play a role in the growth of lung tumors. Alimta, combined with cisplatin (another cancer drug) is given intravenously, approximately once a month. Most patients treated with the Alimta/cisplatin combination suffer side effects such as low levels of blood cells, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain, skin rash and fatigue. The FDA has approved the Alimta/cisplatin combination treatment. Onconase Onconase is a new chemotherapy drug that is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of mesothelioma. This chemotherapy drug is believed to be relatively free of the crippling side effects of traditional chemotherapy. Gemcitabine Gemcitabine is a new chemotherapy drug that is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of mesothelioma. It is used in combination with cisplatin and Alimta. It is currently believed to be the most effective drug in treatment of mesothelioma. However, side effects may include a temporary reduction in bone marrow function, anemia, risk of bruising or bleeding and an increased risk of infection. Some patients will experience a reduction in appetite, a temporary effect on their liver and/or kidney functions, or a mild treatable rash. |
