Types of Mesothelioma
While two thirds of all mesothelioma cases involve cancer of the lungs, there are rare forms of mesothelioma that affect other human organs as well. The following is a list of known types of mesothelioma:
Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma is typically associated with cancer of the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleural sac, a membrane that surrounds the lungs giving them room to expand and contract. This form of mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers are absorbed into the pleura.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma is associated with cancer of the abdominal cavity and typically affects the liver, spleen and/or bowels. Although less common than pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma is similar in that it attacks the lining of the stomach (known as the peritoneum). This form of mesothelioma occurs when the victim ingests asbestos fibers.
